Why we built Overheard On Main
Because true human stories still matter - and too many of them disappear.
What Overheard On Main is
Overheard On Main is a platform for true first-person stories from everyday people.
We collect and preserve stories that actually happened, told by the people who lived them. Some stay in the archive. Some may later be developed into features across other formats, including newsletters, podcasts, books, and media collaborations.
Why this exists
Wild, painful, beautiful, strange, funny, unforgettable things happen to ordinary people every day.
Most of those stories never go anywhere.
They live for a moment in a conversation, then fade.
We think that's a loss.
Overheard On Main exists to preserve real stories before they disappear - and to create a place where human voice matters more than polish.
What we believe
We believe ordinary people carry extraordinary stories.
We believe truth has texture.
We believe lived detail matters more than polished performance.
We believe the internet doesn't need more empty content. It needs more reality.
And we believe some stories deserve more than a passing mention before they vanish.
How we think about stories
We're interested in stories that feel lived, not manufactured.
That means we value:
- honesty over performance
- specificity over filler
- emotional truth over polish
- human voice over generic content
You don't need to write like an author.
You do need to tell the truth as clearly as you can.
Our standards
We look for stories based on real human experience.
We may use AI as a behind-the-scenes tool to help organize and review submissions, but it doesn't replace authorship, judgment, or verification.
If a story is being seriously considered for public feature, we may ask for a short live conversation before moving forward. That helps protect the credibility of the platform, the storyteller, and the trust of the audience.
How stories move forward
Anyone can submit a story.
Some stories stay private.
Some may become part of the archive.
Some may be considered for expansion into future Overheard On Main projects.
Not every story will be published.
Not every submission needs verification.
But if a story is moving toward public release, we want that step handled carefully and directly.
A place for real voices. That’s the mission.
If you have a story that really happened and still stays with you, we’d love to hear it.
